Your quick win: Pants Fit Quick-Start
Do this in order and you’ll avoid most of the common pants fitting headaches.
  • Choose size from hip (not waist): Measure pants that already fit you in the hip area. Waist is easier to adjust than hips.
  • Use finished garment measurements: Measure a few pairs you love (if you can) and use the average. Choose your pattern size from the pattern’s finished garment measurements based on those pants.
  • Add extra seam allowance: Give yourself room to adjust. (Example: add 1 inch total at the side seam.)
  • Baste before try-on: Stitch seams together with a long stitch length. I like 5.0. If your machine won’t go to 5, use the longest stitch it offers, but don’t go longer than 5.0 mm.
  • Try on inside out: Easier access to seams while you adjust.

Fit in LCD order:

  • L (Length): Pull pants up so the crotch sits where you want it. Don’t worry about where the waist hits yet.
    • Lock it in: Take in or let out side seams while keeping the crotch position where you want it.
  • C (Circumference): Adjust top to bottom from waist to hem.
  • D (Depth): Watch for diagonal wrinkles. Fix them one of two ways: what the wrinkle points up to needs to come down, or what it points down to needs to come up.
  • Balance check: Side seams should hang close to vertical. If they swing forward/back, re-check length/depth.
